“She’ll be right” is a great attitude. Your health after 40 isn’t the place for it.
How You Feel … isn’t Always How You’re Doing
The health signals men are most likely to ignore, shrug off or tough out, & what's actually worth checking.
Tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. Carrying a bit more round the middle than you used to. Less drive, for work, for exercise, for sex. Mood flatter than it was. And telling yourself it's just age.
Here's the thing blokes don't get told. Some of the most important health signals in midlife are exactly the ones men are most likely to ignore. Not because you're not capable, but because nobody has ever really walked you through it.
Most men arrive here because pushing harder stopped working, or because someone who loves them finally said something. And some men arrive with nothing much wrong at all. A father who had a heart attack at 58. A mate who just got a diagnosis. A set of borderline results nobody explained. Or simply a decision not to coast into the next 30 years & hope for the best. That's not being precious, it's the single smartest reason to come in.
Either way, you're in the right place. No lectures, no guilt, & no expectation that you'll start drinking green smoothies.
The first move is a proper look at your numbers. Most men have never had their bloods read for optimal function, only for disease.
And then the part that rarely gets said. Even a full set of results only tells us what is happening. It won't tell us why, & with men's health after 40 the why is usually sitting in your sleep, your stress, your weight, your drinking, & the fact that nobody has ever asked.
That's not a reason to skip the bloods. It's the reason to start there & then keep going.
Already had bloods done? Send them through. They're a useful start, & I'll tell you what's worth adding.
A PROPER INVESTIGATION
THE FULL MEN'S PANEL, TAKEN AT THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY & READ FOR OPTIMAL FUNCTION, YOUR WHOLE STORY HEARD WITHOUT RUSHING, & DEEPER TESTING WHERE IT GENUINELY EARNS ITS PLACE.
PROGRESS YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE
ENERGY, DRIVE, RECOVERY, SLEEP, MOOD & MORE, TRACKED MONTH BY MONTH ALONGSIDE YOUR NUMBERS. EVIDENCE, NOT JUST ENCOURAGEMENT.
A PLAN THAT ACTUALLY FITS YOUR LIFE
WHAT TO CHANGE, IN WHAT ORDER, BUILT AROUND YOUR WORK, YOUR TRAINING & WHAT YOU'LL REALISTICALLY DO. NOT JUST A LIST OF THINGS TO BUY.
Sound Familiar?
You're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix, & you've been calling it "busy" for 3 years
The weight has crept on around the middle & won't shift the way it used to
Your focus isn't what it was, & you're covering for it
Recovery after training takes days now, not hours
Your drive has dropped off, for work, for exercise, for sex
Mood is flatter, or the fuse is shorter, & you've put it down to pressure
You've had bloods done & been told everything's "normal"
You're not one for making a fuss, which is exactly how you ended up here 5 years later
Someone close to you has had a health scare & it's made you think
Nothing's actually wrong, but you'd rather know where you stand than find out the hard way
The good news?
None of that is an inevitable consequence of turning 45. These are physiological changes with physiological drivers, & most of them are within reach. The blokes who do best aren't the ones who never have problems. They're the ones who don't ignore the early signs.
Or maybe nothing's wrong yet
Plenty of men come in feeling reasonably good. They want to know where they actually stand, what is already building, & what's worth doing now rather than in 10 years' time.
That's the easiest work there is, & by a distance the most effective. Everything on this page is simpler to influence before it becomes a problem.
“She’ll Be Right” isn’t a Health Plan
The four things most likely to be building without you knowing.
Your Testosterone
It isn't just "the sex hormone". It regulates energy, muscle & bone, mood & motivation, your brain & your metabolism. Think of it as both a marker & a driver of your overall health.
Which leads to the point almost nobody is told: low testosterone usually shows up years before anything bedroom-related. It shows up as fatigue. As weight round the middle. As flat motivation, poorer recovery, & creeping metabolic problems.
From around 30 it declines gradually, roughly 1% a year. But "it's just age" is too simple, because men today tend to have lower levels than men of the same age a generation ago. That points at weight, stress, sleep, alcohol, activity & chemical exposure, which is the good news, because those are things we can work on.
Your Metabolism & Heart
The actual big one. Heart disease is the leading killer of men, & it's largely driven by a handful of metabolic problems we can measure & shift early: insulin resistance, rising blood pressure, creeping blood sugar, & the metabolically active fat that sits round the middle.
All of it builds silently for years. Nothing hurts, nothing announces itself, & your waistband is usually the first thing to notice. That's exactly why looking early, well before anything reaches a disease threshold, is worth so much more than looking later.
There's also a loop worth knowing about.
Belly fat & insulin resistance lower testosterone.
Low testosterone adds more belly fat.
Sort the foundations & you're working on both ends of it at once.
Your Prostate
Awareness, not anxiety. Your prostate sits just below the bladder & tends to enlarge with age, which is why the first signs are usually about plumbing rather than pain: a weaker stream, taking longer to get going, going more often, or getting up in the night.
Common, usually manageable, & not the same thing as cancer. But it's the subject men put off longest, & that delay is the genuinely risky part.
Two messages, & that's the lot.
Don't ignore urinary changes.
Have the prostate conversation, including PSA testing, with your GP.
Stress, Mood & Mental Health
The blind spot behind the blind spots. Men are far less likely to talk about stress, low mood or anxiety, & far more likely to mask it with overwork, alcohol, irritability or withdrawal. Men are tragically over-represented in suicide statistics, & midlife is a high-risk window.
There are physical threads here too. Chronic stress suppresses testosterone directly, wrecks sleep, drives belly fat & worsens mood, so the mental & the physical feed each other.
Addressing stress & sleep isn't soft. It's some of the highest-leverage health work a man can do.
The Three Questions That Matter
Where are you actually starting from?
A proper men's panel goes well past the standard GP set: testosterone & the hormones that control it, the metabolic & heart markers that travel with it, plus your waist & blood pressure.
Timing matters. Testosterone is a morning, fasted test, & one odd result gets confirmed on a second.
Numbers alone still don't mean much. The same reading can mean two very different things in two different men. Yours get read alongside your symptoms, your sleep, your training & what you're already taking.
Your bloods answer this one well. It's exactly what they're built for, & it's why we start here.
Why are they where they are?
The question that never gets asked. Two men with identical readings can have completely different reasons for them. One carrying twenty extra kilos, the other sleeping five hours a night under constant pressure.
Weight, stress, sleep apnoea, alcohol, training, nutrient status, gut health, chemical exposure. All pulling on the same lever, & most men have several in play at once.
Your bloods tell us the number. They don't tell us the reason, & the reason is the plan.
Which way is the loop turning?
Low testosterone adds belly fat. Belly fat lowers testosterone. Insulin resistance sits in the middle, & chronic stress has its thumb on the scale.
A blood test is one frame of a film. It can't show which way that loop is turning, how fast, or what's feeding it, & that's what decides the next ten years.
Your bloods can't show this at all. That takes the whole story.
The numbers. The reasons. The loop. Get all three & you can change something. Get only the first & you've got a result with no plan. Your bloods open the investigation. The rest of it is a conversation.
Hi - I’m Caro
I'm a qualified Naturopath, Functional Nutritionist & Medical Herbalist, & a decent share of my clients are men in their 40s, 50s, 60s & beyond, who turned up because something had been off for a while & nobody had got to the bottom of it.
I start with standard pathology to establish a useful baseline, read for optimal health, not just ‘disease detection’. But your results are only part of the story.
The next bit is the conversation most men have never had about their own health: your work, your sleep, your training, your drinking, how you eat (no judgement), what's changed & when it changed.
Nothing here is a lecture. You'll get straight information, a plan built around what you'll do, realistically, & a clear line about what belongs with your GP instead.
The early warning sign men ignore
Erection changes aren't just a bedroom issue. They can be an early warning about your heart.
The arteries in the penis are small, so they often show trouble before the bigger arteries of the heart do. New or worsening erectile difficulties can be an early signal of vascular or metabolic disease. A genuine check engine light, sometimes years before a heart problem would otherwise announce itself.
So it's worth raising with your GP. Not out of embarrassment, but as a health marker.
See your GP for erectile changes, any urinary symptoms, blood in urine or semen, or prostate concerns. This page raises awareness. It doesn't diagnose.
“For years, I lived with the debilitating side effects of hyperparathyroidism. After two failed surgeries, I felt completely lost and had no idea where to turn. Then I found Caro and she helped me get my life back.
She took the time to understand my condition, my lifestyle, and what I needed to truly feel like myself again. The results were fast and genuinely life-changing. I’m now feeling better than I have in years and continue to work with her to keep improving.
As a 37-year-old tradie, dad of two, and business owner, I don’t have a lot of spare time but Caro made the process simple, realistic, and easy to stick with.
I would 100% recommend her to anyone looking for a natural approach that treats the root cause not just the symptoms. She’s made a massive difference in my life. 😊”
A Word on Testosterone Therapy
IF YOUR LEVELS ARE GENUINELY LOW & YOU HAVE REAL SYMPTOMS, TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IS A VALID OPTION. IT IS ALSO A MEDICAL DECISION FOR YOUR GP OR A SPECIALIST, NOT FOR ME.
IT CARRIES REAL CONSIDERATIONS. IT CAN WORSEN SLEEP APNOEA, IT AFFECTS THE PROSTATE, IT REDUCES FERTILITY & SHRINKS THE TESTICLES, & IT COMES WITH HEART & CLOTTING CAUTIONS. IT'S ALSO INCREASINGLY PRESCRIBED FOR VAGUE SYMPTOMS WHERE THE EVIDENCE IS THIN.
ALL OF WHICH IS WHY GETTING THE FOUNDATIONS RIGHT FIRST IS SO WORTHWHILE. IT OFTEN LIFTS LEVELS NATURALLY, & IT MAKES ANY MEDICAL TREATMENT SAFER & MORE EFFECTIVE IF YOU DO GO THAT WAY.
MY ROLE IS TO OPTIMISE EVERYTHING UNDERNEATH, ALONGSIDE YOUR DOCTOR.
What Actually Moves the Needle?
Eight things. The first four do most of the work.
Lift Something Heavy, Regularly
Two or three sessions a week is the single best lever for a man's testosterone, muscle, metabolism, mood & ageing. Add daily movement & you're well ahead of most.
Sort Your Fuel
Plenty of protein, loads of plants, fewer ultra-processed foods & less booze. Steadier blood sugar protects your heart, your metabolism and your testosterone at the same time.
Guard Your Sleep
Poor sleep drops testosterone & mood within days. Take snoring & sleep apnoea seriously, & see your GP about it.
Manage The Pressure
Chronic stress is a testosterone killer. Find what actually down-regulates you & do it regularly. What it is matters far less than whether you do it.
Lower Your Chemical Load
This gets dismissed as fringe & it shouldn't be. Hormone-disrupting chemicals are one of the more plausible explanations for why men today have lower testosterone than men of the same age a generation ago. Rather than guess at your own exposure, this is one of the areas where functional testing earns its place.
Know Your Numbers
The right bloods, taken at the right time of day, are the foundation. But if you already wear a watch or a ring you're sitting on more: resting heart rate, heart rate variability, & what your sleep is actually doing as opposed to what you think it's doing. All of it objective, & all of it moves.
Then, & Only Then, Targeted Support
Once the foundations are in, the right nutrients & herbs can do real work. Which ones isn't only about what you're short of. It's about what your body needs more of to run properly, & sometimes about the genetic hand you were dealt. Testing answers a lot of that. Choosing off a shelf & hoping does not.
Know Why You're Bothering
Not a soft add-on. The men who get results are almost always the ones who can say what they're doing it for. Keeping up with the grandkids, still surfing at 70, being around & useful for the people who depend on them. Attitude is part of the medicine.
What good looks like:
More energy & drive, a firmer middle, steadier mood & sharper focus within weeks. & over time, better numbers, with plenty left in the tank.
None of that is secret, & you could make a start on most of it tomorrow.
The harder question is which of the eight matter most for you, in what order, at what dose & whether any of it collides with the medication you're already on.
That's the bit I do.
A Note on What I Don't Do
You'll find plenty online offering peptides, hormone protocols & performance pharmacology. That's prescribing, & it isn't my lane.
What I do is the unglamorous, well-evidenced work underneath. The testing, the food, the training, the sleep, the nutrients & the herbs, chosen for you & checked against anything else you're taking. For most men that's where the actual gains are, & it's what makes any medical treatment work better if you go that way.
And I'll always work alongside your GP. Medication is never stopped or changed except by your prescriber, & with your permission I'll keep your doctor in the loop.
If Things are Hard Right Now
If you're struggling with your mood, drinking to cope, or having dark thoughts, that is a strong & sensible reason to reach out. To your GP, a counsellor, or someone you trust.
In New Zealand you can free-call or text 1737 any time to talk with a trained counsellor. In an emergency, call 111.
Reaching out is what strong looks like.
Your Path Forward
STEP ONE
Get the numbers
Take your request form to the lab, or send through recent results. Your Pathology Analysis reads everything through an optimal health lens & gives you a written report. Standalone, no ongoing commitment.
STEP TWO
Work out why
For most men the bloods raise a sharper question than they answer. The Wellness Kickstart is where the whole story gets heard: your history, your work, your sleep, your training, your drinking. Deeper testing where it genuinely earns its place.
STEP THREE
Rebuild then prove it
Food, training & sleep first. Targeted support only where your results call for it. Then your symptoms tracked month by month alongside repeat bloods, so progress is evidence rather than encouragement.
Available via Zoom across New Zealand & Australia, or in-clinic on the Kapiti Coast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you actually work with men?
Yes, & more than people assume. Naturopathy tends to be marketed to women, which leaves a lot of men without an obvious door in. Most men who come here are 40–70, & they arrive with fatigue, gut issues, weight that won't shift, or a set of blood results nobody has properly explained.
I'm not into the whole wellness thing. Is this going to be preachy?
No. There's no expectation that you'll overhaul your life or start meditating. Recommendations are built around what you'll realistically do, & the aim is always the smallest set of changes that shifts the most.
Can you test my testosterone?
Testosterone sits within a proper men's panel, & interpreting it in context is exactly the sort of work this practice does. A single number in isolation tells you very little. It needs SHBG, the free or calculated level, the pituitary signals, & the metabolic picture alongside it, all taken at the right time of day. What I don't do is prescribe or manage testosterone therapy. That's your GP's or a specialist's call, & I'll say so clearly if that's where your results point.
What if my testosterone is low, can you fix it?
Sometimes the foundations lift it considerably, & for a lot of men that's exactly what happens once weight, sleep, stress & nutrient status are addressed. Sometimes they don't, & the honest answer is that a medical conversation is the right next step. Either way you'll know where you stand, & you'll have addressed the things that make any treatment work better.
Is erectile dysfunction something you treat?
Assessment of erectile dysfunction belongs with your GP, & it's worth going, because it can be an early signal of vascular or metabolic problems. What this practice does is investigate & support the terrain underneath: blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation, stress & sleep, alongside whatever your doctor advises.
Why do I feel flat when my blood tests came back normal?
Standard reference ranges are built to detect disease, not to define good health. You can sit inside them & still be a long way from where energy, drive & clear thinking live. Reading your results against narrower functional ranges, & as a connected pattern rather than isolated numbers, very often explains what nobody has been able to explain so far.
Can you help with fertility or sperm health?
No, & I'll refer you on. That's a genuine specialty & you deserve someone who does it properly.
What about my prostate?
Prostate screening, PSA testing & diagnosis are firmly medical. Please see your GP for those, & don't ignore urinary changes.
Will you tell me to stop drinking?
You'll get honest information about how alcohol affects the things you've come in about: sleep, liver function, blood sugar, testosterone, recovery. What you do with that is your call. This is a partnership, not a lecture.
Will you work alongside my GP?
Yes, always. Medication is never stopped or changed except by your prescriber, & with your permission, collaborative-care letters keep your GP in the loop.
Can you help if I don't live on the Kapiti Coast?
Absolutely. Around half of all clients work with Caro entirely online, from all over New Zealand & Australia. Test kits are couriered to your door.
Find Out What's Actually Going On
You've pushed through long enough. There's a version of the next thirty years where you're strong, sharp & still doing the things you enjoy, & it starts with knowing what your own results actually say.
